Q. I am having trouble accessing the Online Edition of the Scales. What should I do?
A. The answer to this question depends on your circumstances:
1. If you have been able to access the Scales from your computer before and suddenly are unable to access them, please send
an e-mail to scales@creativelearningpress.com.
2. If you have never been able to access the Scales, please check with your school’s IT or systems administrator to make sure that your school’s firewall is not blocking access. You may need to ask to have the IP address for the Scales (216.15.64.140) added to the school’s list of approved sites. If you continue to have trouble, please send an e-mail to scales@creativelearningpress.com.
Q. We are only completing Scales on students we think would qualify for our gifted program, not the whole student
body. Will the percentile ranks (norms) generated be valid?
A. No. In order for the percentile ranks to be valid, you must complete Scales on an entire population.
Q. Are there national norms for the Scales?
A. No. The authors of the Scales encourage schools and districts to develop their own local norms, and the Online Edition of the Scales does this task for you. Student populations and school districts vary widely from community to community. A student who is being challenged in a classroom in New York, may find that he is way ahead of his peers in a classroom in New Mexico. Local norms compare students with the peers in their classes and grade level and are a more accurate assessment of whether that student’s needs are being met with the services he or she is receiving.
Q. What are the cut-off scores for each Scale?
A. There are no cut-off scores. The results from the Scales do not show one student as gifted and another as not gifted. The
percentile ranks generated show only where students fall in relation to other students. You should use this information in
conjunction with other information about the student to determine whether that particular student’s needs are being met. For
discourse on developing a defensible identification plan, you may refer to Appendix F in the
Scales for Rating the Behavioral
Characteristics of Superior Students—Revised Edition.
Q. Do I need to complete all 14 Scales for the results to be valid?
A. No. Complete only the Scales appropriate to your school and programming options.
Q. Which norms should I use: the ones generated in the schoolwide report or the ones generated in the districtwide report?
You need to discuss this question within your district to decide what makes sense for your district and students. In districts that have a wide range in the quality of schools (some that are underperforming and others that are excelling), you may want to use schoolwide norms so that students in the underperforming schools are not being unfairly compared with peers in the “better” school. If your district is rather uniform, district norms may be appropriate for you.
Q. Can one teacher look at another teacher’s scales results?
A. There are three levels of access. Teacher, Principal / Administrator, and District Manager. Teacher access lets teachers see
only the records they have generated. Teachers are allowed to add or edit students, but are not allowed to delete students.
Principal / Administrator access allows the user to view schoolwide reports. The District Manager can view districtwide reports as well as schoolwide reports.
Q. I want several teachers to complete different Scales on the same student. Is that possible with the Online Edition?
A. Yes. You can have a language arts teacher complete the Reading Scale and a math teacher complete the Math Scale, and
so on, for one student. There are several ways to set up the database to accommodate this kind of request, so please contact
scales@creativelearningpress.com to discuss your options.
Q. I want several teachers to complete the same Scale on one student. Is that possible with the Online Edition?
A. Yes and No. It is possible to have several teachers complete the same Scale on one student. You would need to generate
three different records for that student (and therefore have three different Student Ids). However, the local norms generated
would be skewed as the student will be counted three times instead of one.
Q. I am having trouble printing the reports. What can I do?
A. Different web browsers print web pages differently. If your reports are not printing satisfactorily, please email us at
scales
@creativelearningpress.com and we will e-mail you a printable PDF of the reports. Keep in mind that you can download the
reports into Excel or any other database.
Q. On the reports on the web, I don’t see teacher names. How do I get that information?
A. Because we did not want to slow the system down, the web reports do not include teacher names or other student data besides scale scores. These reports give you “at a glance” information. When you download the reports, you will be downloading all of the information you entered on the student, including teacher, grade, age, ethnicity, program enrollment, etc. You can then sort and examine data by any criteria you wish.
Q. I don’t see scores for some of the students I entered. What happened?
A. If you don’t see a student’s scores, please check that you have entered the grade level properly. The grade level must be a
whole number and not written out (for example, type in “3” for 3rd grade, not “Third Grade”).
Q. What happens if I want to add more records than I purchased?
A. You can purchase additional records at any time. We will continue to keep your account open and allow you to add data
until you run out of records or wish to close the account.
Q. What happens if I don’t use all the records I have purchased?
A. If you have records left over that you wish to use at a later time, simply inform us that you wish to do so and whether or
not you want the data from the left over records to be added to the school’s current set of data or if you wish to start over (i.e.,you want to use the left over Scales in the next academic year with a new batch of students or new batch of teachers).
Q. I would like to find more information on how these Scales were created. Where do I find that information?
A. The manual for the
Scales for Rating Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students—Revised Edition (www.creativelearningpress.
com/clp/662.html) provides that information.
Q. Do you offer any teacher training activities?
A. Yes. The manual for the
Scales for Rating Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students—Revised Edition provides training activities for each Scale.
Q. How long does my data stay active?
A. Data stays active for 12 months after it was generated. It is then archived on our server. After 12 months, you can reactivate your data for a small fee.
Q. Can anyone outside our school or district see our data?
A. The Scales Administrator has access for administration purposes. The developers of the Scales (Renzulli et al.) also have
access and may download data from time to time for research purposes. However, the developers do not have access to
school information. No other schools, districts, or persons have access to your data.
Q. Can I reuse the records I have purchased?
No. You cannot use the same 50 or 100 records from year to year. Just as the paper Scales are copyrighted and are for one time use only, the Web Scales are for one time use only.
If you do not find the answer to your question here, please send an email to scales@creativelearningpress.com and we will
