Oceanography: Save an Endangered Species

Invite students to research endangered marine species (Humpback whale, brown pelican, Hawaiian monk seal, California sea lion, southern sea otter, Amazonian manatee, etc.) and the laws that have been enacted to protect them. Ask students to select one species and write their own endangered species protection law. As they develop their laws, have them answer the following questions:
  • Why is it important to save this animal?
  • Why is this animal endangered?
  • What specific courses of action are necessary to save it?
  • How will these actions be administered and carried out?
  • How will these actions be financed?
  • How can the public help?
  • What will the penalty be for breaking the law?
  • How will punishment be enforced?
  • If fines are levied, where will the money go?
  • How will you obtain the cooperation of the commercial public sectors?
