Fearsome Critter Tale

Fearsome Critter Tales originated in the 1800s and were designed to scare newcomers. These tales feature gruesome critters that do not take kindly to trespassing humans. The names of some critters included log gar, wangdoodle, wunk, teakettler, fibbertigibbet, and squid-gicum-squee. Invite students to create their own fearsome critters by first brainstorming a list of possible names and then illustrating a picture of their favorite scary varmint. Have students write a short tall tale that features their critter doing some mischievous or scary things. After students finish their stories, ask them to display their illustrations and matching takes on a classroom wall. Have each students place a blank piece of paper under his or her story and invite other students to add additional details to the adventures of each creature. Students will enjoy watching their tall tales grow even taller.
